So I decided to be weird and try to drum up a Halloween story. Hilarious, considering this isn't the stuff I normally write. So forgive me if I seem to be making odd magical assumptions, okay? Suspend reality and give it a whirl, see if you like. There's a little romance, a little magic and a little ... oh, just go see. But it has to be good angst. I don't like hair-tearing and breast-beating and gnashing of teeth. I want the stories that make me say, "Guh!" as I'm reading.
I found this with Souvenir, by Therese Fowler. I'm anti-carving, most years, when it comes to the Halloween pumpkin. Not for any sense of snobbery, but rather utter laziness. Inevitably, I get an overly-complex design and end up mistaking a light area for a dark one, and booger up the whole process.
So what do I do? I paint the pumpkin. Because it's easier. In what reality, I don't know, but every time I try to undertake this process, I forget how ridiculously complicated the whole ordeal becomes. Because of the day-long painting extravaganza, I decided I should document the progress. As if it makes the undertaking legitimate. So check out the pics below, and welcome to my Halloween Hell. One more reason why I adore the SCWW conference? The South Carolina Writer's Workshop offers the Carrie McCray Memorial Literary Awards in three categories: Novel-First Chapter, Poetry, and Non-Fiction. And despite being a Nervous Nellie about entering competitions, I was bolstered enough by my win in the In Other Words Competition at the Pennwriters Conference earlier in the year to dare submitting work in a couple categories. Guess what? I won second place in the Non-Fiction category! Needless to say, I am incredibly thrilled to have my work selected for such a fantastic award. So let me publicly thank the South Carolina Writer's Workshop and the judges who reviewed the entries. Did I mention I'm over the moon about this? Because I am! So what do I do when I'm not writing, or avoiding writing? Reading. And I figured hey, why not start sharing when I find a book that makes me purr? I am a nit-picky reader. Not to the extent that I flip out if a story doesn't go the way I want it to, but more so that there's a huge difference between a book I like, and a book I LOVE. The criteria varies, so there's no point trying to explain the complicated mess that happens in my brain. Instead, when I have a *squee* moment over a book, I'll start sharing the *squee*. How's that sound? Good? Good.
Driving back to Pennsylvania, but stopped in Virginia because Mother Nature hates me and wants to dump buckets o'rain on my head as I drive.
Annnnd conference over. Sad. I don't leave until tomorrow, so I get another night of the surf lulling me to sleep before I must return to reality.
I feel like I should pretend I'm busy writing my little patootie off, but what I'm really doing is lounging on a squishy bed with my balcony door open, listening to the ocean waves.
I have arrived in Myrtle Beach for the South Carolina Writer's Workshop. I should probably be downstairs searching out the registration desk, but I decided I need pizza more right now. Wanna see the view?
This is a rough week for Google searches. There's one about Beaver County that is best left untouched. So this week's winning Google search is:
